Lives Many Faces
Fifteen years ago I first heard the term pseudo-egalitarianism, the false equality, from Dr. Steve Schroeder-Davis in Minneapolis. In the time it was talking about "foolproof" of education to punish the academically gifted. In the course of my work with people suffering from problems related alcohol I found the other side of the same form of denial's insistence institutionalized persons are the same, although obviously arenÂ't, and that a condition is best treated by a single, usually without success, the focus. Ignorance and fear seem to be the propulsion forces in both cases, but neither the talent, neither customers nor society are very well served by programs based on both.

To pretend otherwise is to ignore the primary factors of success in the diagnosis and treatment of any condition, including alcohol dependence. The development of practices Current treatment evolved from the marketing of the 12 Steps of AA, an approach that worked for a group of alcoholics who had failed other approaches used in the 1930s. These approaches had failed worldwide, only a subset that became the group that the most recent practice is derived.
Once established, the programs themselves also became philosophically incestuous, with those who experienced success in the real turning believers who trained the next generation of "advisors", and those who failed in a base of 12 steps was understandably silent about from their failures. Through this process of screening programs became increasingly homogeneous and customers were in a revolving door with few alternatives available. This has gone through fifty of repeat tears, while other approaches have been lost, ridiculed, suppressed, or simply ignored.
Lately, however, other models have begun to appear or reappear, rooted in medical programs and cognitive behavioral approaches. Programs which is the philosophy client-centered, not focused on the dogma. Politically incorrect, some even walking on the forbidden ground of moderation.
